What do they the check into for a spouse of someone applying for special forces top secret clearance?
My husband is trying to go special forces and he will be needing a top secret clearance. I am wondering if they will do a full blown investigation on me as well, or just him. What will they ask for ect. hope someone can help!
I was in the Army for 4 years and needed a top secret security clearance for the occupational speciality I wanted. Back then, computerization was still early and a lot of the checking was done (by security agents) with phone calls and letters and such to past landlords, schools, employers etc. Nowadays, they can do a background check quickly and thoroughly on anyone – I’m sure they’ll do the basic on you, the same type an employer (such as an airline) might do. Now, please be aware that they will ask your spouse if he has ever even once tried substances such as marijuana in his youth. If he says yes – his clearance will be denied, even though it does not seem fair for someone who tried it once and decided it was wrong. Also, I hope you were born in the US and were a citizen at birth. They can and may deny people security clearances if spouses/intimate companions are or were ‘foreign nationals’.
