When writing a book, is it important to just start writing or get a lot of research?
as I said in other questions, im writing a book and im getting a lot of research. But, my friends are telling me to write and it will eventually come to me. though i am writing, im not understanding the concept of my book enough to have a full plot. is it more important to kepp up with my research or just write on? which will help me grasp my subject and thoughts more?
I’m not sure what you mean by research. People write in different ways. Some need an outline of the plot, others don’t. Try writing an outline. If you can’t come up with enough material for a book, then you need to do more thinking.
There’s research on writing, which can help you avoid getting halfway through your book and discovering you don’t have enough plot or compelling characters.
There’s also books on historical details, technical details. If you’re writing a crime novel, you need to have some idea of what police procedures are. Nothing is more stupid than a book with a hero/heroine with NO experience trying to chase down a murderer WITHOUT ever bothering to call the police.
Equally tedious is a historical book where the actions/details are all wrong for the day and age. Or a scientist with no clue about the science he is supposedly an expert in.
You can look up details as you go (for example, not figuring out winter transport in your novel set in the 1500s before you have a scene in the winter), but you need to know enough to make sure your plot isn’t based on a mistake, such as setting your book in a country you’ve never been to and know nothing about.
